Alumni

If you are a graduate of the Northern Film School and want to get in touch and tell us how you're getting on and what projects you have worked on or are working on, then please get in touch.

Alumni Production Scheme

The Alumni Production Scheme at the Northern Film School is run to give their graduates the opportunity to develop their professional portfolios. The Scheme is mentored and supported by a combination of industry professionals teaching within the school, and creatie practitioners in the UK, with resources available in house or hired on a project basis.

Support for the Alumni Production scheme can take different forms, for instance pairing graduates to pitch for projects from external clients, or alumni might develop a proposal in partnership with the Northern Film School to pitch for project funding from external agencies. Within the scheme, the Northern Film School becomes the executive producer, overseeing projects through development and production, through to their successful completion.

If you have a project and are looking for filmmakers to realise it, or if you are graduates with a proposal, please email J.Granville@leedsmet.ac.uk to discuss it further.

Opportunity to make a short promo film...

Beth Nicholls is running an innovative new art and creative enterprise retreat in the Yorkshire Dales, May 11-15th 2011. Combining creativity, enterprise and community, the Do What You Love retreat brings together emerging artists and outstanding successful creative entrepreneurs to give participants the tools and inspiration to do what they love, for life. (See www.dowhatyouloveforlife.com for more info)

Beth is looking for someone to make a short promotional film about the event, in return for a free place on the retreat (worth around £1000) including all meals, accommodation in a luxury eco-lodge, a three day art workshop and creative enterprise advice from people like Kanya King, founder of the MOBO Awards, and Matt Stinchcomb, European Director of Etsy.com, the world's biggest online handmade marketplace. This is a great opportunity for someone to get hands-on experience, while benefiting from a unique creative enterprise experience at the same time. Style is open to discussion and this is not just a standard corporate-type film! If any of your current or former students are interested please can you ask them to email me before April 16th.

FOR PITCHING NOW!!!!

FACTS: There is a budget for the whole project of £ 4,500. If you are interested in pitching please contact Jenny on J.Granville@leedsmet.ac.uk asap to discuss where the NFS might support you in order to make your pitch competitive.

THE BRIEF:
Northern Ballet is creating a new ballet, Cleopatra, which will premiere in Leeds in February 2011.

They would like to make a promotional film and trailer for the ballet to be featured on their website and in-house display screen; on the websites and screens for the venues where the ballet will be performed throughout 2011; on news websites and potentially on TV as part of an interview / preview feature.

As a touring company they are on the road a lot of the time and the dancers won't be back in Leeds until the week commencing 15th November, and then only for that week. However, they are holding a Cleopatra launch event at Sadler's Wells in London on Monday 15th November which will comprise talks from David Nixon (their artistic director and choreographer) and Claude Michel Schonberg who has created the music, along with two duets from the ballet being performed by their dancers. This would be an ideal time to capture some dance footage and perhaps get some interviews for VO. There is also the possibility that some further footage rehearsals and interviews with the dancers in the lead roles could be captured in Leeds later that week.

Sundance for graduate's film

A film written and directed by a Leeds Met alumnus will be screened in one of the world's most respected film festivals.
Mohamed Al-Daradji, who graduated with an MA in cinematography from the Northern Film School, will see his film 'Son Of Babylon' shown as an entry in the 'World Cinema Dramatic Competition' as part of the Sundance Film Festival. The key annual international festival for independent cinema, takes place in Utah, USA from 21 - 31 January 2010.

Son Of Babylon unearths Iraq's hidden horrors as Al-Daradji takes his audience on a journey through Iraq in 2003, just after the fall of Saddam Hussein. It is the second feature film from Mohamed Al-Daradji, following his debut Alhaam, a film that represented Iraq for the Oscar and Golden Globe Awards in 2007.
The film is one of only fourteen short-listed for the competition from thousands of entries from around the world.
